Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has urged Ben White to reconsider his stance on playing for England to avoid a potential feeling of regret at the end of his career.
White was left out of Gareth Southate's recent squad for friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, with it emerging the defender informed the Three Lions' boss of his desire not to be selected for his country.
Southgate expressed his disappointment at White's decision, though decided against providing full clarity on the reasoning behind this outcome. A report later emerged in the Telegraph, claiming White's call relates to a remark made by assistant England manager Steve Holland at the World Cup in Qatar.
England are the favourites to prevail as winners at this year's Euros in Germany, a shot at glory White looks set to miss out on being part of unless he performs a U-turn. Should the 26-year-old opt against declaring himself available to the Three Lions for the foreseeable future, Merson hopes this is a move that does not come back to haunt him.
«Some players think they don't have a chance of playing for England so what's the point in going to a tournament, but Ben White is one injury away from starting,» he wrote in hisSky Sports column.
«White has experience from playing in big games with Arsenal every week. He's really not a million miles off it. He could even play at centre-back.
