Why Bayern Munich star Harry Kane escaped red card during Arsenal Champions League clash

Arsenal drew 2-2 at home to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night in their Champions League quarter-final first-leg fixture. However, many Gunners fans thought the Bundesliga giants should have been down to 10 men, believing that Harry Kane should have been sent off.

The former Tottenham striker returned to haunt Mikel Arteta's side after converting a penalty to put the German champions 2-1 ahead on the night after Leroy Sane was fouled in the box. It was Kane's 14th goal in 19 games against the Gunners.

But the 30-year-old was booked by Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg in the 55th minute after his right arm made contact with Gabriel underneath the Brazilian’s jaw. Many suggested that the incident should have resulted in a red card.

And VAR did not intervene to inform the referee that a red card should have been shown because it was not deemed as being deliberate. Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett, however, believes Kane was a «lucky boy»

«Kane can count himself a lucky boy. His swinging elbow to the face of Arsenal defender Gabriel in the 55th minute of Tuesday night’s thrilling Champions League quarter-final first leg was dangerous, reckless and with excessive force,» wrote Hackett, who refereed in the Premier League between 1992 and 1994, in his Telegraph column.
