Why Liverpool fans left iconic Kop flags at home for Atalanta Europa League quarter final clash

The Kop at Anfield had a very different look about it as Liverpool fans protest against ticket price rises.

Jurgen Klopp's side host Atalanta in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash, but the usual display of iconic flags on the famous stand were conspicuous by their absence as punters railed against planned ticket price hikes by club owners FSG. Adults will have to fork up out to £904 for a season ticket at the Premier League title chasers next season.

With the Reds' future on the park uncertain due to Klopp's departure at the end of the season after seven years at the helm, fans are angry at being asked to fork out more to see their favourites next term. Banners appeared in the Old Trafford car park prior to Sunday's 2-2 draw with the great rivals, and the protests continue at Anfield for the visit of the Serie A side.

Fan group Spion Kop 1906 said in a statement: "We are disappointed in the football club's decision towards ticket prices for 24/25. In response, there will be no flags on the Kop for Thursday night's game. Unlike the club's own approach, this has been agreed in consultation with other fan groups.

"We will pay our respects to the 97 with Hillsborough flags only at this weekend's league match, as always with it being the closest game to the 15th of April. There is still a chance for the club to hold some positive dialogue with the supporters board in time for Saturday's meeting. Until then the supporters have one message: NO TO TICKET PRICE INCREASES."

But as long as the fans actually keep turning up, Klopp can live with the lack of flags. He said: "That the flags aren't there? No. As long as the people are there, it's all good. I understand the concerns and the discussion. It's a tricky one
