Arteta channels his inner Wenger
Last time Arsenal faced Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Arsene Wenger was in charge. If you read the transcript from Tuesday's notes post-match press conference without seeing a date on it, you could be forgiven for thinking that he still was. «I didn't see it,» was Arteta's pre-prepared answer to any refereeing controversy on the night — and there was plenty.
First there was Harry Kane's elbow on Gabriel. The England striker has something of a reputation for these little digs and was lucky to escape a red card for a far more blatantly brutal challenge on Gabriel at the Emirates during his Spurs days. This one was far more subtle as he turned around to check where the Brazilian was before manoeuvring his elbow into Gabriel's face.
The incident was spotted by Glenn Nyberg on the pitch resulting in a yellow for Kane. But this is a curious case where, if the Swedish ref had missed it, VAR surely would have no choice but to intervene and send the former Tottenham striker off.
Gabriel was then at the heart of another controversial incident as he seemingly picked up a goal kick that had been rolled to him by David Raya. It's clear that the Brazilian thought he was placing the ball down to take the goal kick himself as he often does, but with the referee's whistle having already sounded the resumption of play, it's easy to see why Bayern were so incensed by the decision. No one more so than Thomas Tuchel.
