Club captain Wissam Ben Yedder (33) looks increasingly likely to leave AS Monaco at the end of the season, according to L’Équipe.
Ben Yedder’s future has been in flux for some time. Despite the France international’s contract with Les Monégasques expiring at the end of the season, there has been no sign of efforts towards securing a renewal, whilst the club’s executives have remained consistently coy on the subject.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the former Sevilla forward, Ben Yedder is still having a solid season; not only is he Monaco’s top-scorer, but his tally in Ligue 1 is only bettered by Kylian Mbappé. Regardless, Ben Yedder’s time at the Stade Louis II looks to be reaching an end.
The Frenchman’s season has thus far been marred by off-field matters. Ben Yedder is under investigation for “rape, attempted rape, and sexual assault”, with the alleged events taking place in July 2023. He was placed under judiciary control and for a time, was forced to live at Monaco’s training centre in La Turbie. A date for the case to be deliberated is yet to be set.
This ongoing investigation, as well as Ben Yedder’s age, make a contract extension unlikely, even if the club’s sporting director Thiago Scuro has stated that the topic of a contract extension will be evoked at the end of the season.
Monaco’s highest earner is therefore likely to depart in the summer, but not before. According to L’Équipe, the MLS will not be an option for the Frenchman. The most likely scenario will see Ben Yedder move to the Middle East. Saudi Arabia, and notably Al-Ahli have shown an interest in recent months, whilst Qatar is also a viable option.
