A scouse musician went from school music rooms to performing at the UK’s biggest festivals.
Katy Alex, a 28 year-old from Aigburth, is a producer and DJ who specialises in dance music. Her first taste of music was hearing her great-grandad playing the piano and violin, which she later picked up herself.
Katy was soon spending every possible moment practising her music. Speaking to the ECHO, Kary said: “Writing enabled me to clear the noise in my head. In school, I literally spent every break, every lunch [practising] and I'd often get kicked out by the caretaker after school because I sat by the piano, just playing and writing.”

Katy struggled to foresee a future where she would be performing at major festivals and be well on her way to making music her full-time job. She said: “I probably had days where I’d dream big and thought, ‘I'm gonna be on a massive stage with people screaming’.
“As a kid, we probably all do that bc that what sparks the passion and interest in the first place. But I don't think I ever really thought I could do this as a full time job. I'm quite a real person and knew it was gonna be a massive task and a lot of real work was going have to go into it.”
It was a last-minute booking at Creamfields last year that forced Katy to recognise how far he’d come. She said: “10 years ago, when I was just starting off at university and I'd just started going to festivals, I’d never thought I'd be doing Creamfields.”
Katy’s shift from pop to dance music has helped her rise. She attended writing camps in Miami and Germany and learnt from DJs Laidback Luke and Roger Sanchez, who were inspirations for her growing up during tough times for
