Emile Smith Rowe leaving Arsenal? For Chelsea of all clubs? Well, that's the rumour heading into transfer deadline day.
Despite spending more than £350million, breaking the British transfer record to sign Moises Caicedo as well as bringing in the likes of Romeo Lavia, Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku, it would appear that the Blues — under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino — remain open to more deals.
And reports have emerged suggesting that they are lining Smith Rowe up as a potential target. Initially, it was reported that Arsenal's stance was that they would like to keep the Hale End academy graduate and it was unlikely that the 23-year-old would be leaving the Emirates Stadium, but crucially, nothing had been ruled out.
However, it's been claimed by The Times that the north London outfit would be willing to sell Smith Rowe following an approach from the Blues. Whether the two clubs can reach an agreement remains to be seen, but with Friday being deadline day it's safe to say a decision is imminent.
Deals between the Gunners and Chelsea have been common in recent years. Although, more so in one direction with Petr Cech, David Luiz, Willian, Jorginho and Kai Havertz making the switch from Stamford Bridge to the Emirates Stadium. In fact, aside from Olivier Giroud in 2018, you'd have to go back to 2006 for the last high-profile Arsenal star to make the jump when Ashley Cole crossed the divide in a swap deal involving William Gallas.
But with Smith Rowe not playing a single minute of Premier League football so far this season, some Arsenal supporters are beginning to accept that he might just be on the move and have taken to social media to suggest Edu Gaspar and company should not entertain offers less
