Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham could be set for a huge bidding war to sign Brentford star Ivan Toney in the January transfer window. Toney, who is currently serving an eight-month ban from football, recently decided to change agents amid talk of a potential move away from the Gtech Community Stadium.
football.london understands the England international is someone that has interested Chelsea for a while now and when his ban from football ends in January, a move for the Brentford striker could be considered. However, signing someone who has missed over half of the season because of a ban presents a risk in itself.
According to London World , the Blues are leading the race to sign Toney ahead of the January transfer window. The report states that the Brentford star is Mauricio Pochettino's ideal choice, meeting three crucial criteria; English, age profile, and proven in the Premier League.
Despite signing Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku in the summer transfer window, Pochettino is still keen to bolster his attacking options. According to Simon Phillips, the Blues have even looked at trying to do a pre-deal to sign him.
There has been no agreement reached so far, but that doesn’t mean that it wont be down the line. Chelsea are still pushing for it, but Brentford are keen to see what other clubs are seriously interested.
This could see the likes of Arsenal and Spurs enter the race to sign Toney — resulting in a bidding war for the England international. Toney is set to return to action on January 17 when his ban ends and the 27-year-old has continued to train to maintain his fitness and sharpness.
