Ange Postecoglou explains why he's different to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta in so many ways
Whatever you do, don't ask Ange Postecoglou whether there are similarities between the Tottenham head coach and Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.
The north London clubs meet on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium and while they have come on very different journeys, both Postecoglou and Arteta's teams will meet in the Premier League having won four of their five matches, drawing one, with Spurs having scored four more goals than Arsenal but conceded one more.
Arteta's management career began just four years ago at the age of 37 after a playing career that took him from Barcelona's academy to PSG and then on to Rangers, Real Sociedad, Everton and Arsenal.
For Postecoglou, he arrived at Sunday's derby via a very different route, spending his playing career at South Melbourne Hellas, making four international appearances for Australia, before an injury-enforced retirement sparked a management career that has taken him across the world from Australia to Greece, to a World Cup with the Australian national team, before spells in Japan and Scotland ahead of his Premier League move this year.
During his time at Yokohama F. Marinos, Postecoglou spent a week at Manchester City and observed Arteta in his role as one of Pep Guardiola's assistant coaches. It came at a time when Postecoglou himself was struggling to get noticed by European clubs despite his titles across the world, with interviews going nowhere.
«I don’t want to cast aspersions on people, it’s just they had never heard of me. You were looking at blank faces,» he said. «You hope that there is a flicker of recognition there about something, but it was like they had just me, someone who they did not realise was in the football world, let alone potentially a candidate for a club.
