He was the solitary Scot at the recent Asian Cup.
In recent times he’s the only guy from this country to work in the Bundesliga. And his first managerial job was in the English Championship. So why is Mark Fotheringham never quoted when a gaffer gig becomes available in Scotland? It’s a question he often asks himself – but he’s still searching for the answer. Fotheringham is still only 40.
After a playing career with Celtic, Norwich City and Fulham – plus stints in Cyprus, Switzerland and Germany – he’s now one of our most promising young managers. In 2022, as assistant to legendary boss Felix Magath, Fotheringham helped Hertha Berlin stay in the Bundesliga against all odds. Magath, who won the Champions League and European Championships as a player before securing titles at Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg as a manager, says THAT was his biggest achievement.
Off the back of it, his Scottish No.2 – who had already worked at German clubs Karlsruher and FC Ingolstadt – was made head coach at Huddersfield Town. But with the Yorkshire club in turmoil amidst a boardroom takeover, Fotheringham lasted just three-and-a-half months. After getting five wins and six draws with a side embroiled in a relegation battle, he was replaced by Neil Warnock.
One year on, the Terriers are still scratching around at the bottom end of the table having emptied Warnock and his successor Darren Moore. If anything, Fotheringham says the experience has made him a BETTER boss. In Germany, his stock remains high. That’s why legend Jurgen Klinsmann wanted him on board as South Korea reached the semi-finals of the Asian Cup in January.
