African legend in critical condition after horror crash

An African legend, one who claimed both the Africa Cup of Nations and the CAF Champions League titles, is reportedly in critical condition after narrowly escaping death during a horror collision with a truck.

Ex-Zambia talisman Rainford Kalaba is reportedly fighting for his life in hospital after he was involved in a devastating car accident in his homeland on Saturday.

According to Lusaka Times, Kalaba was a passenger in a Mercedes-Benz that collided with a truck, but, sadly, the woman driving the vehicle passed away at the scene while the former footballer survived.

The former Chipolopolo captain is said to have suffered internal injuries, while a preliminary investigation into the incident is said to have indicated that the crash occurred as a result of an improper overtaking. 

The Mercedes-Benz is understood to have collided with the truck in a head-on collision as the two vehicles were heading in opposite directions.

While it was initially suggested that he had passed away at the scene of the accident, Kalaba remains in ICU in "artificial coma", with some Zambian officials understood to have visited him in hospital.

The 38-year-old made more than 100 appearances for his country, and famously won the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations with Zambia, as well as the 2014/15 CAF Champions League with TP Mazembe.
