L’Équipe report via AFP that Al-Ittihad are “furious” with Karim Benzema (36) after he returned from his holidays late during the winter break and missed the resumption of training in Jeddah. The former Real Madrid striker was left stranded in Mauritius and hence missed the start of Al-Ittihad’s training camp after the Saudi Pro League’s winter break.
In the end, the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner returned to the Saudi Pro League champions 17 days later than he was supposed to, according to AFP. Al-Ittihad training resumed on the 2nd of January. In addition to his arrival 17 days later than planned, the Saudi club were unable to contact the former French international for over 10 days to understand why he was late, a source close to the club told AFP. This has left Al-Ittihad “furious” with the situation.
Despite his late return to training and rather difficult start to life in the Gulf State overall, Karim Benzema remains committed to Al-Ittihad. Reports had linked him with a move away from the club, however, the 36-year-old intends on staying at the club following his return, according to Foot Mercato.
