Alan Shearer gives his verdict on Jose Mourinho replacing Eddie Howe at Newcastle United
Alan Shearer would oppose Jose Mourinho taking over as Newcastle United’s manager in place of Eddie Howe.
After being fired from AS Roma in Italy, Mourinho has been floated as a potential replacement at St James’ Park.
The former manager of Chelsea and Manchester United is currently searching for his next challenge; his final destination is still unknown.
Mourinho has been linked with a number of jobs in recent weeks, with a move to Saudi Pro League also mentioned in the media.
Shearer spoke on The Rest Is Football Podcast about his thoughts on the possibility that Mourinho replaces the current Magpies manager:
“He has had an amazing career, Jose. Where he goes next, I’m not sure. But, no, I am very happy with Eddie Howe at Newcastle, the job he has done and the job he is doing.”
Mourinho has been linked with the Newcastle job a number of times, more so after the PIF’s takeover of the club. The Portuguese manager worked with an iconic Newcastle figure in the early days of his managerial career.
After being linked with the job at St James’ Park in 2021, Mourinho said: “On Newcastle, I don’t have anything to say. Absolutely nothing to say.
“The only thing I can say is that for many, many years, I worked with one of the most important figures in the history of Newcastle, Sir Bobby Robson, and so because of that I have always had a bit of an emotional connection with that city and that fanbase. But it’s nothing more than that.”
The Magpies are currently seventh in the Premier League with Howe’s job under scrutiny. They were expected to match their success of last season or go even one step further but their inconsistent form and injuries have made it difficult for them to perform this season.
