Alan Shearer says one Arsenal statistic vs Man City is warning for Liverpool

Alan Shearer thinks the fact Arsenal managed to limit Manchester City to just one shot on target in their own stadium during Sunday’s goalless draw means it was a “really good” weekend for the Gunners.

He believes Mikel Arteta’s side will stay in the title race throughout the run-in, with their defensive display at the Etihad Stadium putting City and leaders Liverpool on alert. Arsenal have the best defence record in the league, having conceded just 24 times in 29 matches.

They are also the highest scorers, with 70 goals on the board so far albeit could only muster two efforts on target against City. However, this is more than the hosts themselves managed, despite the visitors only attaining 27% possession.

Shearer has suggested that the Gunners will gain confidence from the result going into the final nine games of the league season. He is sure that the club will be in the race right up to the wire.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said: “To go to the Etihad and play against those players and concede just one shot on goal is a really good weekend for Arsenal. What it also says is they’re not going away, Arsenal, by the way. They’re not going away.”

Arteta has managed to keep clean sheets in both league games against City, having won 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium back in October. Analysing the game on Match of the Day 2, Shearer reinforced his view on Arsenal’s study backline performance on Sunday.
