Ange Postecoglou has admitted that he is looking for a new centre-back this summer to bolster his options and there is a clear direction in which Tottenham could go.
The Australian faced a tough spell this season when he had to play four full-backs at the same time in his backline with Ben Davies and Emerson Royal filling in as makeshift centre-backs due to Micky van de Ven's hamstring injury and Cristian Romero's suspension. Both players have since had other injuries and Spurs moved in January to bring in Romania international Radu Dragusin from Genoa in a deal that eventually be worth around £26million to ensure they had more natural centre-back cover.
Next season the currently fourth-placed north London club are hoping to be playing many more matches with the prospect of European football on the menu as well as longer runs in the domestic cup competitions under Postecoglou. With that in mind, the Spurs boss made it clear last month that he would be looking for a new centre-back to add to his options this summer.
«If you’re saying 'is it an area we can strengthen?' Yes it’s an area we will probably look at,» he said. «With all these things it’s about trying to strengthen the group as much as anything else. If you think about when I first arrived, we had maybe six or seven centre-backs at the club. So it’s not just numbers. It's more about the ability of those players to play the football we want and to fit in to what we're trying to build here. I think it is an area of the park we will look to strengthen.»
