The British billionaire owner of Premier League side Tottenham, Joe Lewis, pleaded not guilty to insider trading charges Wednesday in a US federal court.
The 86-year-old Bahamas-based Lewis earlier travelled to the United States where he surrendered to authorities in New York.
Lewis is accused of furnishing employees and lovers with inside information for years in a “brazen” scheme between 2013 and 2021 that raked in millions of dollars.
The charge adds yet another layer of uncertainty at Tottenham for new Australian manager Ange Postecoglou to contend with.
Postecoglou is in the early stages of planning his Spurs revolution which includes a potential battle to keep Harry Kane, while there are multiple deals he was hoping to close, such as signing Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg and Ashley Phillips from Blackburn.
But now the man responsible for bankrolling such moves for Spurs is facing serious charges.
It has drawn sympathy for Postecoglou in the UK, with Daily Mail’s Matt Barlow writing how he had now been given “a crash course in the perils of managing Tottenham”.
“Things rarely go smoothly,” he wrote.
Postecoglou was asked about the matter while on tour in Singapore and if his plans are unchanged.
“Why wouldn’t they be?” he said. “The club’s already said it’s not a club matter. We’re not putting out a statement that’s not true so if it’s not a club matter it doesn’t affect me in terms of what I’m trying to do so no-one’s said anything like that to me.
“If you think that’s what I’m involved in you don’t know what my role is here.”
The Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, announced on Tuesday that Lewis had been indicted along with two co-conspirators.
