Former Liverpool striker John Barnes has backed Newcastle United to make a move for Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe in the January transfer window. The Hale End graduate has continued to struggle for game time at the Emirates Stadium, failing to start a Premier League game this season.
Smith Rowe, 23, has made only seven appearances in all competitions this campaign, with only one start coming in the Carabao Cup win over Brentford. The versatile forward has found it difficult to become a regular under Mikel Arteta in the last 14 months following a period out
Chelsea had shown interest in signing Smith Rowe toward the end of the summer window, but Arsenal decided to keep him and Cole Palmer moved to Stamford Bridge instead. His ongoing struggle to break into Arteta's team has resulted in Newcastle being linked with a move in the winter.
According tothe Mirror, Eddie Howe is keen on the playmaker to bolster his attacking options. Newcastle are short in their wide areas after £39 million-signing Harvey Barnes was ruled out until the new year, at least, with a foot injury.
Speaking to mybettingsites.co.uk, ex-Liverpool ace Barnes has urged Newcastle to make a move for Smith Rowe and Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips. «Phillips and Smith Rowe are young and English. I love it when young English players go to clubs who have high aspirations,» he said.
«They both are very good players. Obviously, it's not worked out for Phillips at Manchester City but that doesn't mean he's not a good player otherwise Man City wouldn't have bought him.
