Arsenal may have scored 25 goals in their past six games, but that hasn't stopped Mikel Arteta being asked if he still needs a striker this summer. In the build up to Saturday's 4-1 win over Newcastle, the Spaniard certainly wasn't willing to close any doors despite his side's recent form.
«No, I think it shows that the team has the ability to score goals and share the goals,» he said when asked if the Gunners had outgrown the calls for a new number nine that seemed so deafening at the start of January. «We have to do that consistently. At the end of the season you’re going to have to score a certain amount of goals in order to have the best chance to win titles. That’s undeniable.»
These sentiments were echoed by Gunners sporting director Edu before the game game. «I understand what the fans are asking for but we have already our ideas, our targets,» he told TNT Sports. «We plan a lot ahead of what we’re going to face.
»I would be worried if we're not scoring a lot of goals, if we're not creating chances, which is the opposite, I think we're creating a lot, we're scoring a lot of goals. The plan is to every year to try to get better, I think we’re in a good moment and let's see if we can keep improving."
So it does seem as though Arsenal are still looking at bolstering their forward line this summer. Unsurprisingly just days after those comments, the Gunners have once again been linked with a move for Brighton's Evan Ferguson.
The Irish international is thought to be a player of interest for Arsenal and would certainly tick the box of a physical presence many have suggested they need up front. The Gunners have also been heavily linked to Ivan Toney of Brentford when it comes to players of this mould.
