Athletic Club player Iker Muniain announced that he is leaving the club at the end of the season in a video on the Basque club's social media. He does so, according to the club, of his own free will. The Navarrese player will finish his contract with the Lions next June.
Muniain will leave the club that has been his home for 15 seasons, in addition to his time as a youth player, through the front door. The captain will leave for another destination after having been able to finally lift the Copa del Rey. Forty years have had to wait in Bilbao to be able to take the 'Gabarra' out again.
Athletic's captain has played a total of 557 games for the Basque club, scoring 75 goals and providing 70 assists. This season, he became the second player with the most appearances in the club's history, only surpassed by another red and white legend, Jose Angel Iribar.
Iker arrived at Lezama when he was just 12 years old as a child. He made his debut with the first team at the age of 16 in a match against Young Boys in 2009. After a number of stints at the club, he left at the age of 31, having left his mark on San Mames and the fans.
Finally, Athletic Club has announced that, in the near future, an event will be held to give Iker Muniain the farewell he deserves. This event will be open to the general public, who will be able to pay tribute to their captain.
