Athlone Town 1 Treaty United 0
Athlone Town won their first game since the opening day of the season as Treaty United slumped to their second defeat of the weekend.
The game was slow to come to life with Athlone's Jamal Ibrahim having the first chance when blasting over. The home side did not have long to wait though for the opening score which came after 17 minutes.
A long ball forward from Oisin Duffy fell to Aaron Connolly who shot past the keeper's right to the net. The Town number eight followed up scoring by firing over but Treaty came more into contention as the half progressed. Yousef Mahdy was United's main threat and his goalbound header was tipped behind by Enda Minogue for the first corner kick. Mahdy again came close from the delivery when shooting just wide. The Treaty striker was once more narrowly off target with another attempt but Athlone regrouped and had two chances to increase their lead before the break. Jarlath Jones saw his shot put behind for the home team's first corner and Ibrahim should have doubled the lead on the stroke of half time but fired over from close range.
Treaty were in search of an equaliser when play resumed but two corners up to the hour mark were not capitalised upon. Athlone's first chance of the half saw Ibrahim fire wide.
Connolly came close to grabbing his second after 75 minutes but was denied by Michael Dike who saved with his legs. Substitute Ruben Ferreira almost grabbed a spectacular second with the keeper out of position and Athlone withheld a late surge from Tommy Barrett's men to claim the points. Minogue kept a clean sheet to deny Mark Byrne late on as six additional minutes added to the home tension.
