Two surprise Champions League quarterfinal participants have been drawn together to battle for a spot amongst the final four remaining as Atletico Madrid host Borussia Dortmund in Spain on Wednesday.
Neither club has been terribly impressive domestically. Madrid sit fourth in La Liga, barely clinging to a qualifying spot for next season, while Dortmund's situation is even more dire, currently outside the Champions League spots with a fifth place standing in the Bundesliga.
Yet when it comes to European competition, neither side will lay down and die. Dortmund won a massively challenging group before knocking off PSV in the Round of 16, and Madrid impressively nudged past Inter on penalties after coming from behind to level the aggregate score in the second leg.
