Bayer Leverkusen confirm the signing of Man United goalkeeper Matej Kovar
Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed the signing of Manchester United goalkeeper Matej Kovar.
The German outfit had been closely pursuing a deal for the 23-year-old keeper and have finally managed to reach an agreement with the Red Devils.
Kovar, who has made 11 appearances for the Czech U21 side, has signed a deal that will run until 2027 with the Bundesliga giants.
The 23-year-old Czech stopper joined United's youth academy in 2018 from 1. FC Slovácko but has spent much of his career on loan.
He spent the 2021/22 campaign at Swindon Town before joining Burton Albion and then Sparta Prague in 2022/23.
He has played for Czech Republic's youth sides from U17 to U21 level and was called up to the senior side for a friendly against Ukraine in 2021.
He leaves United without a senior appearance for the Red Devils.
Kovar departing the club leaves boss Erik ten Hag with Andre Onana, Tom Heaton and Dean Henderson as his in-goal options.
The Red Devils boss will be grateful that he doesn't have to call upon one of Onana's deputies, after the Cameroonian escaped a red card in their 1-0 win over Wolves.
The hosts almost paid the ultimate price deep inside second-half stoppage time after Andre Onana hurtled off his line to claim a cross but missed the ball entirely.
Instead, the goalkeeper clattered into forward Sasa Kalajdzic, sparking fierce protests from the away side and their supporters, before United hoisted clear.
The incident was checked by VAR but referee Simon Hooper was not advised to check his monitor. Compounding his misery, O'Neil was then booked for his protests.
