Ex-Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was straight to the point as he explained his pleasure with his former club being drawn against Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Both clubs ensured their place amongst the remaining eight teams in UEFA's top club competition by overcoming first-leg deficits. The German Champions returned to the Allianz Arena last week to brush aside Italians Lazio, progressing with a 3-1 aggregate scoreline, then Arsenal of course emulated that triumph via a penalty shootout against FC Porto.
The draw for the next round took place on Friday, with the two clubs pitted against each other. Premier League rivals Manchester City were handed Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid were picked with Borussia Dortmund whilst Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona made up the final tie.
From an Arsenal perspective, it brought back plenty of sour memories of past defeats to their upcoming opponents — though in Germany naturally these historical meetings bring back only good memories. Schweinsteiger proved this with an optimistic outlook on the draw, whilst also suggesting the Gunners are not considered amongst the elite teams left in the competition.
«The draw for the quarter-finals of the Champions League did what it promised,» he began by writing on a post to X. «Both German clubs are avoiding the big names for the time being and are allowed to play their second legs in front of their home crowd.
»Nevertheless, I see BVB as an outsider in the game against Atleti's team. FC Bayern on the other hand, has shown in the past that Arsenal suits them and will do everything they can to reach the semi-finals."
