Chelsea travel to one of the Premier League's most daunting stadiums on Saturday afternoon in Newcastle United's St James' Park. The Magpies come into the weekend's game off the back of two straight defeats at the hands of Borussia Dortmund and Bournemouth, but the reality of playing on Tyneside is still a difficult one.
In fact, Newcastle have won five of their six Premier League home games this season thus far. Liverpool, who did so in extraordinary circumstances, are the only team to get anything from a game at St James' Park, where a late Darwin Nunez double got the Reds all three points in the north east.
Paris Saint-Germain even felt the wrath of the 52,000-seater stadium in October with Newcastle producing a stunning 4-1 victory over the French giants in the Champions League. Manchester City, too, have been beaten there this season, with last term's treble-winners being knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the end of September.
Just a month before, City star Kevin De Bruyne had sent a warning to his teammates about what the atmosphere in Newcastle can do to the players. «Even when it was not going well [at Newcastle], the atmosphere was still quite good,» De Bruyne said following the defeat.
«I think for Liverpool, I saw a difference when it's like – obviously it's always a big game between us – I feel like there's a difference when it's Champions League or a night game. Then if you play a 12 o'clock kick-off, I feel like these two are a bigger atmosphere than Arsenal.
»I feel like last year was much, much better. But obviously it has been tough for them the years before so it has been a little less."
