Brad Friedel explains why Liverpool’s Alisson is the Premier League’s best goalkeeper over Man City’s Ederson
Former Premier League goalkeeper Brad Friedel has given his expert verdict on the long-running Alisson v Ederson goalkeeper debate.
The former United States no.1 was speaking to talkSPORT and giving his insights on an incredible career in football.
Friedel made a whopping 450 Premier League appearances across almost two decades featuring for Liverpool, Tottenham, Blackburn and Aston Villa.
Since calling time on his career in net in 2015, English football has been dominated by two Brazilians, Manchester City’s Ederson Moraes, who arrived in 2017, and Liverpool’s Alisson Becker, who came a year later.
Sharing the last six Premier League titles between them and both winning the Champions League, the pair aren’t just two of the best goalkeepers in England, but world football.
However, despite Ederson boasting a bigger trophy cabinet than Alisson, he continues to be picked behind the Reds’ keeper by successive Brazil managers.
And Friedel can see why, pointing out one key reason.
“Alisson for me is the best right now,” he told talkSPORT Drive. “Ederson is excellent also, he’s very, very close to him, but I like Alisson.
“What I like most about Alisson is when he does make mistakes, like all goalkeepers do, it just doesn’t faze him, he can walk straight back out on the pitch again and be very, very good.”
Friedel, though, also singled-out one key factor that makes Ederson the ultimate modern goalkeeper.
He added: “Ederson is probably the best at that, playing out of the back when you’re being pressed.
“He also has that 70, 80 yard pass with great accuracy, Alisson is obviously very good at that as well.”
