Charlton Athletic rescue Exeter City draw after dramatic late goal

Exeter and Charlton both improved their chances of staying in League One after an exciting 1-1 draw.

A late own goal by Cheick Diabate gave Charlton the equaliser against Exeter. The game started off strong for Exeter, with Ben Purrington scoring a header from Jack Aitchison's cross just six minutes in.

This was the earliest Exeter had scored in a home league game since October 2021. Charlton fought back, with Karoy Anderson and Thierry Small both testing Exeter's goalkeeper, Vili Sinisalo.

Just before half-time, George Dobson thought he'd equalised for Charlton, but Purrington made a fantastic save on the line. Exeter's Yanic Wildschut had a shot saved by Harvey Isted, and then set up Luke Harris for a chance that went wide.

With only three minutes left, Charlton finally equalised when Chuks Aneke headed a deep cross towards goal, which unfortunately bounced off Diabate and into the net.

In the final moments, Alfie May could have clinched the win for Charlton but hit the post after getting past Sinisalo. Exeter also had opportunities to snatch the victory in a thrilling end to the match.

Charlton boss Nathan Jones was left frustrated by Friday's draw. “We’ve come here and had more possession, we’ve had more shots, more shots on target,” he told CharltonTV.
