Chelsea complete surprise late transfer as Trevoh Chalobah stays put despite Tottenham interest

Chelsea youngster Diego Moreira has completed a season-long loan to French side Lyon. The 19-year-old arrived on a free transfer from Benfica earlier this summer and has spent his time split between training with the first team and development squad.

The Portuguese youngster went on Chelsea's pre-season tour of the United States and made his senior debut for the club when he played 45 minutes for the club against AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

The Benfica product, who has been utilised in the centre of midfield and on the wing, appeared set to stay with the club over the course of the season with the transfer window beginning to wind down on a day that has seen Chelsea complete a deal for Cole Palmer to finish off their incoming moves.

Moreira was even playing for Chelsea under-21s in Premier League 2 against West Bromwich Albion in a match that kicked off at 7pm on Friday night before he was replaced after 66 minutes. Things moved quickly from there with the teenager completing his Lyon move in time for Ligue 1s 10pm deadline.

It remains to be seen whether Bashir Humphreys will complete his loan to Swansea on Friday night, but Trevoh Chalobah will remain at Stamford Bridge. A move to Bayern Munich failed to materialise when the clubs could not come to an agreement, while late interest from Tottenham also could not result in a transfer.

Mauricio Pochettino is content with the business Chelsea have completed but knows his team will have a difficult task to find immediate success.
