Chelsea will once again have to do without Christopher Nkunku after Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that the attacker would miss the FA Cup fourth-round clash with Aston Villa on Friday. Nkunku hasn't played in 2024 yet due to injury.
Nkunku played no part in the 6-1 thrashing of Middlesbrough on Tuesday despite a small winter break for the Blues. Along with Malo Gusto he was ruled out of the match as Chelsea progressed to the Carabao Cup final.
Pochettino has confirmed that Nkunku will also have to wait a bit longer to get on the field despite joining team training this week. «No they [Nkunku and Gusto] could be available for Liverpool on Wednesday,» the 51-year-old said.
«We need to see how they evolve in the next few days. But they're not going to be available tomorrow.» Gusto was also ruled out of the game and left Axel Disasi to deputise at right-back. The pre-press conference update issued by the club explained that he too was back in team training for the reconditioning phase of his rehabilitation.
The Blues travel to Anfield on January 31, just a day before the end of the transfer window. They are not expected to do much, if any, business in the remaining days though with the recovery of Nkunku and Gusto as well as a host of other key players part of the reason why.
Chelsea are currently working without Reece James, Marc Cucurella and Romeo Lavia. Wesley Fofana remains out whilst Robert Sanchez and Trevoh Chalobah are both closer to a return.
