Chelsea are still expected to make some significant transfers in the summer despite concerns around complying with profit and sustainability rules. The Blues, like most Premier League clubs, were forced into enduring a quiet January transfer window with over £200million spent over the summer trading period.
Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Cole Palmer were among the marquee acquisitions made with another huge spend made possible through a considerable squad exodus. Prior to the arrival of Caicedo and Lavia, fellow midfielder Enzo Fernandez was brought into the club from Benfica for £106million.
And yet Chelsea are considering signing another midfielder with links to a previous option likely to return. Elsewhere, injuries have played a huge part in the 2023/24 Premier League season which has seen one major gamble, which looked strange at the time, proven to be a masterstroke decision by Chelsea.

The Premier League appeared to be the likely destination for Frenkie de Jong with his tenure at Barcelona a turbulent one to say the least. Under Xavi, he has become an important member of the squad although that could change with his departure at the end of the season.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, the Blues are willing to offer Barcelona €100million (£85m) for his signature after reports emerged that he would leave the Spanish club this summer. Manchester United have also been interested in the Netherlands international with manager Erik ten Hag keen to work with the midfielder again following their time together at Ajax.
