He began his professional career in 1998, joining the youth team of Barcelona. Over time, he became an integral part of Barcelona's main squad and a product of the legendary La Masia academy. He spent 17 years at FC Barcelona, eventually becoming its captain and one of the main inspirations behind the "tiki-taka" style of play.
Xavi helped Barcelona win numerous domestic and international trophies, including 8 La Liga titles and 4 UEFA Champions League titles. He became the heart and soul of the team, and his on-field leadership was invaluable to Barcelona's success during that period. Xavi is also a key figure for the Spanish national team. Chelsea’s Andrey Santos has emerged as a target for Barcelona, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The 19-year-old midfielder joined the Blues in January this year but he is yet to make an appearance for the club. Instead, he was loaned back to his former club Vasco de Gama, before making another loan move to Nottingham Forest in August.
His move to the City Ground has yet to go according to plan, though, with Forest in a relegation dogfight. However, the departure of Steve Cooper may benefit Santos because he only featured for seven Premier League minutes under the recently departed manager.
Still, his struggles in English football have not deterred Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez. The legendary former Spanish international is on the lookout for midfielders after Gavi sustained an ACL injury while in action for his country against Georgia.
Chelsea are keen to release players to trim down their chunky squad and the Catalan giants could take advantage of such a situation. A loan deal may be on the cards as Barcelona too will look to cut their costs after some extravagant spending in recent years.
Santos would link up with some of the brightest young talents in European football while having the opportunity to learn from experienced superstars such as Robert Lewandowski and Ilkay Gundogan. Barcelona sit third in La Liga after taking the Spanish title last time around.
