Mark Clattenburg has claimed that West Ham's opening goal against Arsenal had to stand as there wasn't conclusive evidence that the ball had gone out before Jarrod Bowen sent in a cross.
Tomas Soucek found the net in the 13th minute, with the goal being awarded by referee Michael Oliver following a lengthy VAR check.
Former Premier League referee Clattenburg claimed that a chip should be put in the ball in order to provide clarity in future situations.
Various TV replays couldn't categorically prove whether the ball had gone out.
Clattenburg stated that the initial on-field decision to give the goal had to stand.
The replays regarding the incident weren't able to provide clear evidence due to the ball being obscured by Bowen's thigh.
Speaking on Amazon Prime, Clattenburg said: 'There's no other decision the officials can give. The on-field decision is a goal. We cannot be 100 per cent certain that the ball has gone out. As the ball has to be clearly over the line, there's no conclusive evidence.'
'The other point of reference they need is the ball, the ball is being blocked by Bowen's thigh.
'Having cameras above, just have a chip in the ball.'
It is the second such incident involving Arsenal this season, with a goal having been awarded to Newcastle in November when Anthony Gordon found the net amid uncertainty over whether the ball had gone out before Joe Willock crossed it.
West Ham put in a spirited performance in the first half at Emirates Stadium as they restricted Arsenal's threat.
The Hammers proceeded to double their lead through a header from former Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos.
