Controversial Jose Mourinho decision finally made amid Chelsea link and Pochettino sack pressure

Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Roma just six months before his contract with the club was due to expire. It ends a long period of uncertainty over his future with the 60-year-old yet to be offered a new deal in Italy.

Roma are currently ninth in Serie A following a run of one win in their last five and have fallen to five points outside the top four. Having finished sixth last year, qualifying for the Europa League, Mourinho had largely been praised for his work since returning to Italy.

He lead Roma to the Europa Conference League in 2022, endearing himself to the fans. To many he became the club and was the best thing about it following a major drop off for the famous side.

His departure was announced on Tuesday morning following defeat to AC Milan at San Siro on Sunday though. A statement from the club said: «AS Roma can confirm that José Mourinho and his coaching staff will leave the club with immediate effect.

»Mourinho was unveiled as the Giallorossi’s 60th coach in May 2021. He led the team to win the Conference League in Tirana on May 25th, 2022, and to the Europa League final in Budapest last season."

Owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin added: “We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club. We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club. We wish José and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours.”
