Starting against Crystal Palace on Friday the current tops will include numbers — most in the 800s — based on how many players have made appearances for the club before them. Alejo Veliz, for example, is the most recent and will have the number 879 stitched into his top above his name and below the collar.
Labelled as Legacy Numbers, Tottenham have handed every player with a senior competitive appearance for the club a number, dating back more than 125 years.
In a statement put out by the club it states that an FA Cup tie with West Ham on October 13, 1894 was the first ever competitive match with the players on the day assigned numbers 1-11 based on alphabetical order.
