Premier Division: Derry City 4 Dundalk 1
DUNDALK'S poor start to the season continued at a breezy Brandywell, the Louth side failing miserably to record their first victory of the season.
In short, this game was decided during the opening stages of the second period, Derry adding three goals to their 1-0 lead at the break.
The win takes Derry into back into second spot in the table while Stephen O'Donnell's charges are now beginning to look challengers for relegation into the First Division.
Robbie Benson was considered very fortunate not to be sent off when he upended Derry's Adam O'Reilly, the Dundalk player having been shown a yellow card in the 14th minute. Referee, David Dunne, refusing to produce a second booking.
The home side broke the deadlock in the 31st minute following a fluent movement on the counter.
Paul McMullan scampered down the right flank and when he whipped in a low cross the ball broke to the advancing Adam O'Reilly and he steered the ball into the corner of the net.
A shot from Koen Ostinbrink shot was deflected over the Derry crossbar as Dundalk attempted to get back on level terms, their only chance in the opening period.
However the 'Candystripes stunned the 'Lilywhites' after just 30 seconds at the start of the second half and Dundalk were in trouble.
Having failed to deal with a defensive clearance the the ball make its way into the path of Will Patching and his magnificent strike from on the edge of the 18 yards box screamed into the top corner of Ross Mulroe's net, the midfielder's first goal of the season.
And in the 58th minute Derry put the game to bed with a third goal, Danny Mullan set up by Michael Duffy and the striker lashed the ball high into the Dundalk net from close range.
