'Disgrace' - Peter Reid and Everton supporters fume at Dominic Calvert-Lewin red card

Everton legend Peter Reid and a number of other former Blues have expressed their anger over Dominic Calvert-Lewin's sending off against Crystal Palace.

Calvert-Lewin was shown a straight red card during the second half for a sliding challenge on Palace defender Nathaniel Clyne, during which he regained possession of the ball while making minimal contact with the ex-Liverpool full-back.

Referee Chris Kavanagh was shortly after referred to the pitch-side monitor for a VAR review and decided a dismissal was the correct outcome for this challenge.

Calvert-Lewin could hardly believe his eyes after learning he had been given his marching orders, but he was not the only one left staggered by the decision.

Reid and fellow ex-Blues have taken to X (formerly known as Twitter) to call into question the decision-making process of the officials. Plenty of Everton supporters have also voiced their frustration, as shown below.

Calvert-Lewin is now set to miss three games, as per the rules of fouls deemed "serious foul play". It remains to be seen as to whether or not Everton appeal the red card.

Official guidance on what constitutes "serious foul play" is as follows: "A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.

"Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play."
