Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag insisted he was unconcerned by Everton having 23 shots at Old Trafford because their opportunities were “low quality chances.”
Sean Dyche’s side’s failure to score came a week after Comparisonator calculated that their 27 shots in the 3-1 defeat to West Ham United was the highest in the Premier League that weekend while their xG for the season showed them to be the most-wasteful team in the division with just 29 scored compared to their ‘expected’ 42.
When asked if he felt that allowing the opposition to have more efforts than his own side was a sustainable tactic, ten Hag said: “I’ve said this for a long time over many games, the opposition’s xG was not high and ours was much higher. That was their game plan and we have players who feel comfortable to defend low.
“You have to be very disciplined an co-operate very well. I think it was a team performance but especially our back four with Andre (Onana, the goalkeeper) in the back and Casemiro in front, we’ve done very well.”

In terms of whether he’d fear Everton would eventually score because of their large number of shots, the Dutchman added: “No, it’s not true because they were low quality chances. If you see the chances, yes they had some but the way we defended set-plays was very good.
“We were really well-organised, we were really focused and everyone did their job. In the second phase they had some opportunities but then overall we did quite well.”
