As the influx of cash into Saudi Arabia’s top flight domestic football league has arrived, so too has the desire of the Gulf nation to make a huge splash in the transfer market this summer.
Karim Benzema, Kalidou Koulibaly, N’Golo Kante and Liverpool legend Roberto Firmino are among the high profile players to have arrived in the Saudi Pro League in recent weeks as the country’s sovereign wealth fund and owners of Newcastle United, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, have backed a huge spending spree for its four top clubs; Al Hilal, Al Nassr, Al Ittihad and Al Ahli.
Other clubs, too, have been spending big, with another Reds hero, Steven Gerrard, taking the reins at Al Ettifaq and targeting a move for Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson.
Henderson is reportedly considering an offer from Al Ettifaq, while the Reds will want a sizeable sum for the 33-year-old midfielder, who has two years left on his current deal. It has been reported that Al Ettifaq are willing to pay as much as £700,000 per week for the England international’s services, quadrupling his Reds salary.

Thiago Alcantara is another Liverpool player to have attracted interest from Saudi clubs, and on Thursday it emerged, via the Athletic, that Fabinho was wanted by Al-Ittihad, with the club set to make a £40m bid for the Brazilian, who has three years left on his deal at Anfield after signing a five-year renewal in 2021.
