Now, though, the prospect of losing Fabinho has changed all that. And it means the Reds have a simple choice - do they stick to the plan and aim for a long-term successor, or pursue a more immediate replacement?
It's possible they could do both with the signing of preferred target Romeo Lavia from Southampton, although that would be putting a lot on the shoulders of a 19-year-old with minimal Premier League experience.
