Anthony Stokes flew from Dublin on Thursday to hand himself into Motherwell Police Station after failing to appear for sentencing in a Scottish court
Former Celtic footballer Anthony Stokes has been detained in Scotland, after the UK police were seeking his arrest for failing to appear in court to be sentenced for abusing his ex-partner.
The Dubliner, who has nine caps for the Republic of Ireland, flew from the Irish capital on Thursday and handed himself into police in Motherwell, according to the Daily Record newspaper.
The 35-year-old was due to be sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court for sending offensive messages to his former partner Eilidh Scott and her father.
He has since appeared in court in handcuffs with Sheriff Diane Turner refusing to grant the ex-Irish international bail. He has since been remanded in custody until next month as reports are conducted.
Mr Stokes' lawyer Jim O’Dowd, told the court that his client had been “distracted” by court proceedings back in Ireland, adding that the case’s history “won’t be lost on him.”
Mr Stokes had been arrested in Ireland on January 6 of last year in a separate incident, following alleged driving incidents in Dublin after which they brought him to Crumlin station. He was charged with offences under the Misuse of Drugs and Road Traffic Acts as well as several other offences.
The 10 separate offences are all alleged to have happened on January 6.
The dangerous driving charges refer to a number of locations – Walkinstown Avenue, the Walkinstown Avenue/Long Mile Road junction, Kennelsfort Road Upper in Ballyfermot, Ballyfermot Road and, Knockmaroon Road, Castleknock.
