Former St Johnstone striker sets ambitious East Kilbride goal target as new signing aims to be 'bright spark'

New East Kilbride signing John Robertson hopes he can be the spark that ignites a successful promotion push to the SPFL.

The former St Johnstone forward agreed a deal with the Lowland League leaders just before Christmas and made his debut off the bench in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Caledonian Braves, which extended EK’s lead at the top to six points.

Robertson hasn’t seen much football since leaving Northern Irish Premiership side Linfield in October and admits he is still a bit rusty.

But he has told fans he wants to be the man that helps fire Kilby to League Two and the 22-year-old has set himself an ambitious goals target for the remainder of the season.

He said: “I’m here to help the boys get promotion to League Two.

“It is something I have never done before, so it is a new challenge for me.

“The last few months have been tough, a bit boring. I’ve had to wait for international clearance and things like that so that has been a bit of a pain. I’ve just had to sit in the house and work on my fitness.

“But I hope I’ll be a bright spark for the team. I am someone who likes to score goals, somebody who likes to get on the ball, a striker who likes to play off the shoulder.

“I just want to contribute to the team as much as I can and get as many goals as I can.

“Once I start going and my match fitness gets up, I’d like to get 15-20 goals or so by the end of the season.

“But getting us up to League Two is the main goal.”

Robertson has been training with his new team-mates for a number of weeks now and relished getting his first minutes in four months against Braves, even if the result was disappointing.

He added: “It was good to get out there. It has been a long four months since I left Linfield so it is good to get in amongst the group.
