Speaking after France’s 4-1 friendly win over Scotland on Tuesday, Didier Deschamps has said that he “won’t complain” about the competition in Les Bleus’ squad.
There is strength and depth in every position in France’s squad, including at centre-back. Players such as William Saliba, Axel Disasi and Dayot Upamecano were all absent from the recent international break through injury, but in their absence, other players stepped up. Notably, Benjamin Pavard, who has always wanted to be considered as a centre-back by Deschamps, as he is at club level, finally got his chance to play through the middle. The Inter Milan defender went on to net two goals against Scotland.
Against the Netherlands last week, Lucas Hernández, a left-back by trade, also moved into the centre of the defence and impressed. The options in this part of the pitch are therefore multiplying, but speaking in a post-match press conference, transcribed by L’Équipe, Deschamps didn’t complain about the “headaches” that such performances are giving him.
“There are quite a few options (at centre-back). There is huge competition. I have always been given headaches. I won’t complain about that. They know that when they get game time, it is in their interest to perform well,” said Deschamps.
