Arsenal and Newcastle will come head-to-head in Premier League action this evening at Emirates Stadium. Eddie Howe's side beat the Gunners earlier in the season at St James' Park and will therefore be aiming to do the double over Mikel Arteta and his players in their bid to get back into the race for a Champions League spot.
Injuries have significantly affected both teams throughout the 2023/24 season, however a number of players have returned to full fitness over the past few weeks. In Tyneside, Howe has recently welcomed Sven Botman and Dan Burn back into his defence while Arteta has seen Emile Smith Rowe and Fabio Vieira return from injury.
However, both managers are still without a number of influential players for the clash with Jurrien Timber a long-term absentee in north London. «I really hope [he plays again this season],» Arteta said of his summer signing on Friday. «He’s doing really well. He’s been with some players on the pitch.
»He’s going to start to do some bits with us on the pitch in the next week or so. Then we’ll have to see how he’s doing, his confidence level, his fitness level. Hopefully the answer will be yes." Joelinton and Sandro Tonali are also players guaranteed to miss out and it is also unlikely either will feature before the end of the season.
Takehiro Tomiyasu, Gabriel Jesus, Thomas Partey and Oleksandr Zinchenko are all doubts heading into the clash with Arteta's latest updates suggesting just one of the quartet could return. «Let’s see,» he replied when asked if Partey could feature. «We have another session today. He’s been out for many, many months now. We need to really nail the timing of when he has enough in the tank to compete. But I think he’s very close.»
