Harry Kane can’t wait to get away for his first ‘winterpause’ and he’ll be wise to, considering what’s going on in Bayern Munich’s squad.
The German giants finished 2023 with three straight wins, taking down Manchester United, Stuttgart and Wolfsburg to end the year on a high.
Kane was integral in all of those victories, racking up an assist and three goals to take his season total for Bayern to 25 goals and eight assists in 22 games.
However, Bayern ending the year on a high is all the more surprising considering a mystery virus running through their squad.
After a 3-0 win over title challengers Stuttgart in their penultimate game of the year, manager Thomas Tuchel was visibly struggling speaking to the media, and he’s now explained the extent of Bayern’s struggles.
«A few players were in the red zone,” he said after a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg. “My biggest compliments to the team.
“Dayot Upamecano was in the hospital with gastrointestinal problems before the Stuttgart game and he couldn’t drive to the match.
“Raphael Guerreiro spent last night and will spend the rest of tonight on the toilet and didn't sleep at all. Today he played 90 minutes as a double six.
“I had flu tablets up here in my breast pocket. Konrad Laimer is playing with knee pain, Matthijs de Ligt is thrown in after a long injury. In the end it was a feat of strength.”
Kane seems to have avoided any serious issues, and he will be delighted, as he now gets to enjoy the winter break with his family.
German football doesn’t resume until January 12, while in England teams will be tasked with three more fixtures during the festive period.
