'I can't answer' - Ruben Amorim gives cryptic update on Sporting future amid Liverpool links

Ruben Amorim has refused to commit his future to Sporting CP as he continues to be linked with succeeding Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager at the end of the season.

In recent weeks, the 39-year-old has emerged as the frontrunner for the role after Xabi Alonso revealed that he would be staying with the Bundesliga league leaders Bayer Leverkusen for the 2024/25 season.

Amorim, who has been at the helm at the Estadio Jose Alvalade since March 2020, has Sporting on track for a second league title success in four years after Saturday night's 2-1 home win over Benfica extended the club's lead at the top of the Liga Portugal to four points with just seven games of the season remaining.

But when asked after the game if guiding the club to just its second championship title since 2002 would be a big enough incentive to keep him in Lisbon next season, Amorim insisted he is unable to answer questions about his future at this moment in time.

"It wasn't talking about the future, I always want to answer but there are things I can't answer," the 39-year-old said (via Abola). "Last year we came in fourth place and I thought I had to do something different, it couldn't be the same.”

Amorim, who is contracted to Sporting until 2026, is reported to have two different release clauses should he wish to leave the club - one for clubs in Portugal and another for those outside of the country - and could be available for a fee in the region of £12m this summer.
