Crisis meetings enveloped Olympique de Marseille this week after a poor start to the year which has seen the club winless outside of a Coupe de France victory over fifth-tier side US Thionville Lusitanos.
The players have promised an immediate improvement in performances to the club hierarchy as well as representatives of the team’s supporters groups during their meetings. And now manager Gennaro Gattuso has revealed that he will look to change his managerial methods.
Gattuso believes that he has been too lenient during his time in Marseille and will handle the squad with a tougher hand. As he explained, “ At Napoli or Milan if a player did not train properly, I excluded him from the group. ”
He had been reluctant to do the same in an environment that has frequently been combustible, “ in Marseille, I told myself that I would be calmer. I know that it’s very heated here and that if I excluded a player, people would ask me questions .”
Despite the team being in favour of his current methods, Gattuso considers his approach to have been an error. “ It’s my mistake but it’s part of our path, I have to make progress. I wasted time… I have to be true to who I am .
He will waste no further time, in implementing a more aggressive and stricter regime at the club as he looks to turn around a season that has stalled in its pursuit of European football. A fixture against relegation-threatened FC Metz this Friday will be crucial to beginning the long process of soothing the rising tensions that have surrounded the club.
