Bohemians manager Declan Devine and goalkeeper James Talbot
Former Derry City manager Declan Devine has called for greater support for players who, like his goalkeeper at Bohemians James Talbot, have opted to back away from the game due to mental health issues.
Bohs confirmed in a statement on Monday that former Sunderland man Talbot would not be part of the squad for the time being as he was “facing mental health challenges and is taking time to properly address these”.
There was a strong show of support for Talbot on social media from across the game and manager Devine says he’s aware there could be other players facing similar issues.
"In all my time in the professional game he’s one of the best people I have ever met,” the ex-Glentoran goalkeeper said. “He’s very honest and straight, a very talented guy and he deserves huge praise for addressing the issues that were discussed.
"I find it very brave of James to come out and address his issues, everybody connected with the club will give him their full support. He has been an outstanding player for Bohemians, he’s an outstanding person to work with on a daily basis and he’s shown great courage and leadership over the last year or two, especially with his injury.
"For James we wish him every success in terms of addressing these issues, but this is not just about one person, this is something in life, in everyday life that is becoming more and more relevant. I hope that everyone connected with Irish football can get behind any player that has to address these issues, James is very appreciative of the support that he’s going to get and we wish him every success.
“The door is always open for James and hopefully it won’t be too long before he walks through that door again,”
