Neville reveals Rangers' Ibrox as the best atmosphere I've ever seen in my life

Gary Neville has admitted that Rangers' Ibrox provided the best atmosphere he has ever seen.

Back in 2003, Neville's Manchester United side made the trip north of the border to face Rangers in the group stages of the Champions League in a match dubbed 'The Battle of Britain'.

Neville's brother Phil scored the only goal of the game, netting after five minutes to ensure United leapfrogged their opponents in Group E.

United eventually win the group, and went onto lose to eventual champions Porto in the last 16, who were coached by Jose Mourinho. Rangers finished bottom of the group with just one win from their six games.

The game lives long in the memory of many, including Neville, who, speaking on the Stick to Football Podcast, remembers the Ibrox atmosphere well.

'The best atmosphere I've ever seen in my life was Ibrox,' he said. 'As the game was about to kick off, I thought, "What the f**k is this?"

'Celtic was loud. Phil scored early on. Honestly, for the first couple of minutes before the game and when the game started, I've never seen anything like that in my life.

'Noise. Honestly, Ibrox, it was unbelievable. Staggering.'

Roy Keane, one of Neville's four podcast hosts alongside Jamie Carragher and Ian Wright, butted in, arguing: 'Celtic Park's a better atmosphere, anyway.'

Keane made 10 appearances for Celtic as a player before he retired, having joined from United in 2005.

The game in 2003 saw 50 arrests made before the game due to minor public order offences, but police were happy with the lack of activity surrounding the match overall.

Rangers fans did however create a hostile atmosphere for a United side including the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Cristiano Ronaldo.
