Simon Jordan has explained why Xabi Alonso was right to snub Liverpool and stay at Bayer Leverkusen. The former Reds midfielder was heavily linked with replacing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield before ruling out a move from the Bay Arena at the end of the season.
Alonso has been enjoying an brilliant season in Germany, leading Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title and, incredibly, they remain unbeaten after 29 games. After storming past Werder Bremen at the weekend, the 42-year-old has finally ended Bayern Munich's 11-year reign as title holders.
Despite having been widely regarded as the favourite to replace Klopp, Alonso committed his future to Leverkusen in a press conference following the March international break. His admission came as a shock to many, with Paul Merson questioning why the Spaniard would snub an offer which 'come along once in a blue moon'.

Speaking on talkSPORT this week after Alonso got his hands on the Bundesliga title, Jordan slammed the Sky Sports pundit for his 'stupid' take. The former Crystal palace owner said: "I think he was absolutely right not to have taken the Liverpool job.
"I think he was very sensible. I think he was absolutely right not to have taken the Liverpool job. I think he was very sensible. Often in football people take the opportunity because it’s there, it’s the immediate opportunity."
Merson added: "I thought it was strange that it was priced into Leverkusen’s thinking that they would have this propensity to release him because it was priced in, wasn’t it? Saying well, they’ve got a relationship with the manager
