Mario Lemina and Matt Doherty’s second half goals settled the Premier League’s first Christmas Eve fixture in 28 years and left Mauricio Pochettino with plenty to ponder over the festive period.
Defeat left Chelsea with 22 points from their opening 18 games, three less than at the comparative stage last season and, although he took his side through to the Carabao Cup semi-finals this week, Pochettino is facing plenty of questions about whether his side is making progress.
Lemina’s goal capped a strong spell for Wolves, either side of the break, and was the result of appalling defending from Pochettino’s side.
Pablo Sarabia’s right-wing corner flew into a penalty area packed with blue shirts but none challenged Lemina as he headed in a neat finish.
The slack defending was in evidence in the second minute of added time when Hugo Bueno’s cross was met by Benoit Badiashile’s half-hearted clearance which substitute Matt Doherty turned in from 12 yards.
"We feel very disappointed because I think we deserve much more,” said Pochettino. “This competition wounds you when you are not clinical enough.
“We created chances. That is why it is so disappointing. We conceded after a few corners and it was really difficult. We were talking a lot at the beginning of the season. We are young in age. It is a young team.
“We have players playing for the first time in the league. They need to adapt. It is confidence and about quality.
“We need to keep going, we need to keep pushing and this young team needs to learn from these games. We all feel disappointed as we are in a position that, at Chelsea, where we shouldn’t be. But this is a different Chelsea.”
