Jordan Henderson has admitted that Liverpool made the right decision selling him last summer.
The 33-year-old completed a controversial £12m move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq after being informed by Jurgen Klopp that the then-captain’s game time would likely decrease as Liverpool embarked on an £150m midfield overhaul.
Henderson’s stint in the Middle East would last just six months, before he cancelled his contract to join Ajax on a free transfer in January. But while he hasn’t enjoyed the best campaign as a result, it’s been a rather different story back at Anfield.
The Reds currently sit top of the Premier League table, have won the League Cup, and are through to the FA Cup quarter-finals and the Europa League last 16. Meanwhile, summer signings Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo have all established themselves as integral members of Klopp’s side.

Henderson has conceded that it hurts him to admit that Liverpool were perhaps better off without him. But reflecting on his emotional exit, he admits it was the right time for all parties to move on.
“Looking back I think it was the right time for me as a player but also for them as a team and for them as a club, as much as that hurt at the time,” he said when speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of Ajax’s Europa Conference League clash with Aston Villa.
“I was very emotional. Looking back at that period of time now, it is easy to see that it was the right decision made by the manager and the club. It was the best decision to freshen things up.
